CMD Hybrid HexGrit

Hybrid · My thoughts · personally reviewed

A much better hybrid once I build the stability.

Stock, the CMD did not give me the stability or upper-face sweet spot I wanted from a hybrid. Adding perimeter weight changed that: off-center contact became more predictable, the usable hitting area opened up and it stayed maneuverable. With break-in, the feel moved softer while keeping its slightly hollow character. That customized setup is the paddle I enjoyed, not a claim that it arrives equally forgiving out of the box.

THE PLAYING STORY

Here is the part I would pay attention to.

109.0 SW puts it among the quicker-swinging hybrid paddles I have measured. That is interesting for fast exchanges and for players who like to tune a light platform. The 6.45 TW reading is the other half of the decision: quick to move and complete on mishits are two different questions.

Fresh spin is 2,343 rpm, against a same-shape median of 2,150 rpm. That is a starting-surface reading. What I care about next is how much bite remains after actual sessions, especially if the paddle is bought for heavy topspin. I will keep updating that part through real play.

Put it on your list if

  • You want a quicker swing within this shape group.

The tradeoff I would check

  • Check whether the stock response has enough substance before treating low SW as an automatic win.
  • The lower relative twistweight asks for a closer look at lateral mishits.

FROM MY REVIEWS AND REPLIES

Here is what the sheet cannot tell you.

My 20+ hour CMD Hybrid review, played primarily with added weight. Stock readings, customized estimates and longer HexGrit experience on other paddles stay separate.

Court notes

Stock and customized are two different recommendations

The stock upper-face response reminded me of Hurache-X: I wanted more stability and margin. The added weight made blocking and countering more predictable. I like the CMD much more this way, but MPP Turbo ArmorGrit Hybrid and Pegasus Power 2 still feel more naturally forgiving to me. If I want stock-ready stability, CMD is not my first pick.

Court notes

Enough offense, not the easiest free offense

The recorded 56.6 mph power and 36.8 mph pop put the stock reference in useful all-court territory. My playing verdict is about the customized paddle: confident drives, useful counters and calmer resets after it softened. I would not claim the same speeds were remeasured after adding weight. Turbo ArmorGrit still gives me easier offense and stock forgiveness.

SHAPE AND SETUP

How I would approach this paddle.

Hybrid · Aero

16.3 × 7.7 in

The hybrid footprint sits between the longer and wider alternatives. I would use it as the starting point if you want some reach without committing to the narrowest face. The aero outline is recorded separately from the main shape. I would not turn that label into a claim about aerodynamic speed without a test. The recorded handle is 5.50 inches. For a two-handed backhand, check the throat transition and usable grip room as well as that number.

Start with a reason to add weight.

My reviewed setup used 3 g per side around 3/9, another 0.5 g per side at 2/10, and an approximately 5 g overgrip: 7 g total on the face, not 3 g total. I would still start a new tuning experiment with 3 g total split evenly and test before building toward my recipe. The extra mass improved off-center stability and the upper hitting area without making it feel sluggish to me.

Stock: 7.65 oz, 109 SW, 6.45 TW, 238 mm. My customized setup is estimated at 8.07 oz, 112.8 SW, 7.09 TW and 234 mm. These are setup estimates, not new measured readings or stock PPI inputs.

THE SURFACE QUESTION

Fresh spin is only the starting point.

My real-play update · 2026-10-23

HexGrit

Wear: The sweet-spot texture becomes noticeably smoother.

Spin in play: Spin is still very good; I have not noticed a meaningful on-court drop on my long-played samples.

Still one of my strongest retention choices, even when it no longer feels fresh.

50–75+ hour surface experience. My 75+ hour reference is Power 2 and Ultré Jelly Bean 2. Other HexGrit shapes get family context, not an equal hour count. CMD itself is at 20+ hours.

John Kew reports 0% measured spin loss on a production CMD in his 100-impact accelerated test. That supports this surface’s retention story under his protocol, not a lifetime guarantee or a claim about every sample. I will keep updating real-play tracking.
