30-Hour Grit Update: After about 30 hours of play, the grit has started to wear off quite a bit. The surface is still gritty, but at this point, it feels more like a traditional raw carbon fibre surface.

So far, it seems like only the Batch 1 Fuse Elongated paddles are still holding their grit fairly well. Pakle said they plan to rework the grit and then test it by replicating a durability test similar to 100 ball impacts at 60 mph, before shipping the later batches. We’ll see whether that improves the grit consistency and durability.

Short version up top:

At $101 with the SLICE15 coupon code, Pakle Fuse Hybrid feels like the Enhance MPP Turbo Hybrid with grit slapped on it, and if that's actually what's going on here, that's a really good thing.

The Shape

The Fuse Hybrid comes in at 16.2" x 7.8" on a 5.5" handle, with no taper. That shape matters to me because it's almost dead-on the Chorus Hybrid, which had been my favorite paddle shape. So the moment I picked it up, it already felt familiar in hand, and I didn't have to relearn my swing paths or my reach the way I do jumping onto a true elongated. If you already know you like a hybrid footprint, this will slot right in.

First Impressions and Break-In

Straight out of the wrapper, the Fuse Hybrid played stiff. Stiff and hollow. That first session, it had a firm, boardy response with almost no give, and I'll admit it had me a little worried the paddle was going to stay locked up like that. But then I remembered my Enhance MPP Turbo Hybrid felt the same way when it was fresh until it had some time on it, and this is just classic MPP foam behavior. The core needs a break-in period before the foam wakes up. So instead of writing it off, I gave it time and kept playing.

By the end of the second session, it started to open up. The stiffness backed off, the response got noticeably thicker, and the face softened into something much more forgiving and lively. That deep MPP thonk showed up right where you'd expect it to, and the more I played, the more the paddle settled in. If your first hit feels stiff, don't panic and don't judge it yet. Two sessions in, it becomes a different paddle.

The Weighting

Stock, the Fuse Hybrid came in at 7.7 oz with a 109 swing weight and a 6.57 twist weight. That's light and fast, which is great, but I wanted a bigger, more stable sweet spot for how I play.

I threw 3g pickle clips at 3 and 9 o'clock, plus an overgrip, bringing it up to 8.25 oz with an 114 swing weight and a 6.93 twist weight. The sweet spot opened up noticeably, off-center hits became much more forgiving, and it still stayed fast enough in hand for kitchen exchanges.

Here's the part that made me smile: 3 and 9 are exactly where it wanted the weight. And that lines up perfectly with the theory that this is the Enhance MPP Turbo Hybrid underneath, because the Enhance Turbo MPP has internal perimeter weighting sitting at 3 and 9. So adding external clips at 3 and 9 is basically just doubling down on the balance the paddle was already engineered around. It made sense on paper, and it made even more sense on the court. With that setup dialed in, the sweet spot broadened out, and it genuinely felt like I was playing with one of my favorite MPP Turbo Hybrids.

The Grit and Spin

This is where the Fuse Hybrid separates itself. The DuraSpin surface here is grittier than the Fuse Elongated I've been playing, straight out of the box. You can feel it under your fingers, and it translates on court into a really clean bite on drives, rolls, and kitchen spin.

And this is the key upgrade in my mind. The MPP Turbo Hybrid pockets the ball beautifully thanks to the core characteristics and the MPP foam, but it doesn't have any real grit on the face. So you're getting all that dwell and pocketing from the core, but you're leaving spin on the table. The Fuse Hybrid keeps that same pocketing feel and adds a genuinely gritty surface on top of it. If this really is the same platform, then this is a straight upgrade. Same soul, more spin.

The Grit Durability Question

Of course, the question with any foam paddle is the same one every time: how long does the grit last? That's the silent killer, and it's the one thing I can't fully answer yet.

What I can tell you is that the early signs are good. At 10 hours in, I'm not feeling any drop-off. When I run my fingers across the face now, it feels the same level of grittiness it did on day one. That's a genuinely positive sign this early.

For context, I've got my Fuse Elongated sitting at almost the 40-hour mark, and I don't feel any real difference in its grit either. So if the Hybrid does the same as the Elongated has for me, I think we're in good shape. Ten hours matching where the Elongated is at forty is exactly what I'd want to see.

I'll also be upfront about batch 2 of the Pakle Fuse, which had a grit issue where the surface was coming off. But Pakle handled it about as well as a company can. They replaced the affected paddles without even making people send theirs back first; they fixed the problem in batch 3, and they actually delayed that batch specifically so they could fulfill all the replacement paddles first. That's the kind of thing that makes me more comfortable buying, not less, because it tells you how they respond when something goes wrong.

So far, everything I'm seeing on the Hybrid is on the positive side of the grit-durability question. But I'm keeping an honest eye on it, and I'll update this if anything changes past the 10-hour mark.

The Specs

Paddle Shape Static Weight Swing Weight Twist Weight Handle
Fuse Hybrid (stock) Hybrid, 16.2 x 7.8 7.7 oz 109 6.57 5.5 in
Fuse Hybrid (3g @ 3&9 + overgrip) Hybrid, 16.2 x 7.8 8.25 oz 114 6.93 5.5 in

Bottom Line

If this is the Enhance MPP Turbo Hybrid with a better, grittier DuraSpin face, then the Fuse Hybrid is an easy paddle to recommend. You get the familiar hybrid shape, the same MPP pocketing and dwell that make those paddles so satisfying, and now you're actually getting spin off the surface instead of relying on the core alone.

For a hybrid this close to my favorite shape, with MPP feel and real grit at this price point, this is one of the more exciting releases I've played in a while. I'll report back as the hours pile up.
